Teju Cole’s beste tweets over Afrika

Wie Teju Cole alleen van zijn roman Open City kent, verwacht hem niet meteen op het o zo vluchtige Twitter. Want Open City kenmerkt zich door doelbewuste plotloosheid en trainerende traagheid. Met de bespiegelende wandelingen van hoofdpersoon Julius lijkt Cole een lange neus te trekken naar zowel literaire conventies als de moderne maatschappij. “Ik handel in subtiliteiten”, verduidelijkte hij zijn werkwijze, “en mijn doel is de lezer zo achter te laten dat hij niet weet wat te moeten denken. Een goede roman zou geen punt moeten maken”.

Dat betekent niet dat de Nigeriaans-Amerikaanse schrijver, fotograaf en kunsthistoricus nooit een punt wíl maken, laat staan dat hij het niet kan. Zijn Twitter account is daar het onomstotelijke bewijs van. Net als de roman biedt Twitter Cole een vorm om op intellectueel verantwoorde wijze mee te experimenten. Vorige maand deelde hij een hele serie van dit soort foto’s via Twitter.

“Honderden kinderen zijn gedood door Amerikaanse drones”, was de begeleidende tekst. “Dit zijn sommige van hun namen, opgeschreven en uitgegumd”. Eerder gebruikte hij Twitter al voor zeven korte verhalen over drones.

Naar aanleiding van de Kony 2012 video definieerde hij middels een soortgelijke opzet het White Savior Industrial Complex. De betreffende tweets in de oorspronkelijke volgorde:

1. From Sachs to Kristof to Invisible Children to TED, the fastest growth industry in the US is the White Savior Industrial Complex.

2. The white savior supports brutal policies in the morning, founds charities in the afternoon, and receives awards in the evening

3. The banality of evil transmutes into the banality of sentimentality. The world is nothing but a problem to be solved by enthusiasm.

4. This world exists simply to satisfy the needs – including, importantly, the sentimental needs – of white people and Oprah.

5. The White Savior Industrial Complex is not about justice. It is about having a big emotional experience that validates privilege.

6. Feverish worry over that awful African warlord. But close to 1.5 million Iraqis died from an American war of choice. Worry about that.

7. I deeply respect American sentimentality, the way one respects a wounded hippo. You must keep an eye on it, for you know it is deadly.

Met een bijzonder intelligent, genuanceerd stuk pareerde hij de kritiek op zijn sociaalmediale tirade. Critici vonden hem rancuneus en racistisch. Bij Afrikaanse Toestanden zijn we juist bijzonder gecharmeerd van de radicale manier waarop Cole ons een spiegel voor houdt. Een meme van een van zijn tweets sierde onze Facebook pagina:  Every 60 seconds in Africa, a minute passes. We can put a stop to this.
